Ear Correction (Otoplasty)

What is otoplasty?

The most common ear surgery performed is for the correction of prominent ears, which can be quite troublesome for some children, especially at school, when they are often victimised for their appearance.

This procedure is also commonly performed on adults who have always had concerns about the appearance of their ears and who have now decided to act upon them.

Smaller ear surgery is performed for skin cancers, as well as for repairing split earlobes that can occur when earrings get pulled through the lobule.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

This surgery aims to sculpt and shape the cartilage of the ear and to reposition the ear closer to the scalp.  Although there is no ‘normal’ ear shape, this surgery aims to alter the shape of the ear so that it appears more ‘average’ and will no longer be noticed as being different.

Is Mr Morgan experienced in this procedure?

Mr Morgan has had many years of experience in performing these types of procedures.  At your consultation, Mr Morgan will be able to show you before and after photos of his own patients, many of who will likely have had the same concerns about their ears as you.

How is it performed?

Otoplasty is performed most commonly under general anaesthetic.  Children are usually observed overnight in hospital, but adult patients will be discharged on the same day if feeling well.

The procedure is carried out through incisions on the back surface of the ear, so there are no visible scars.  Following the operation, a large padded bandage is wrapped around the ears and scalp to hold them in position and protect them.  This is removed during your first post-operative visit one week later.

Your ears will have their new shape at this time, but will remain a little bruised and swollen for another week or two.

How long will I need to recover?

Everyone will experience an anaesthetic or recover from an operation differently.  Although uncommon, complications can also occur and result in a longer recovery time.  Generally, most patients will recover sufficiently in two weeks to return to social activity and office-based work.  More physical activity may require an extra week.

Who should/should not consider this type of surgery?

The best results are achieved in those with a clearly defined concern and realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.  In situations where this is not the case, the outcome from surgery may often be disappointing.

You should not consider this type of surgery as a response to a personal or professional crisis, or under the encouragement of somebody else.  Any decision to undergo surgery needs to be for the right reasons.  All surgery entails an element of risk, and you should not make any decision regarding surgery at a time of stress.

Being healthy and happy with your decision increases the chances of achieving a satisfactory result.  Smoking, other medical conditions, and being overweight can make surgery unsafe.  These and other risks will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
