Liposuction

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a very useful and versatile surgical procedure to reduce fatty deposits in many areas of the body.  It is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the world.

Liposuction is not used as a weight reduction technique, but rather is used to treat specific areas of contour deformity or fat deposition that have resisted the efforts of diet and exercise.  It is suitable for areas such as the neck, the arms, the abdomen, and especially the hips, thighs, and knees.

The results from the procedure are reliant upon good skin quality. Once the excess fatty tissue has been removed, the skin will need to shrink to fit the new contours, otherwise the outcome of the procedure can be disappointing

Liposuction is often used as an adjunct to breast reduction surgery.  It is can also be used during an abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) or in other forms of body contouring surgery.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

This is an excellent procedure to smooth out your final silhouette, or to simply deal with those problem areas.

Is Mr Morgan experienced in this procedure?

Mr Morgan has had many years of experience in performing these types of procedures.  At your consultation, Mr Morgan will be able to show you before and after photos of his own patients, many of who will likely have had the same concerns about their problem areas as you.

How is it performed?

These procedures can be performed under local anaesthetic, with or without sedation, or general anaesthetic, and are often performed as a day case.

A limited number of small incisions are made in the skin to allow access to the areas to be treated.  These are placed in such a way so that the resulting scar is well hidden or camouflaged.  These wounds are closed with stitches that will need to be removed and are covered with waterproof dressings, allowing you to shower as soon as you feel comfortable.

Bruising and swelling can persist for two weeks, after which time a return to work is possible.  A pressure garment will be fitted to you that will apply constant pressure to the treated areas post-operatively.  This will hasten your recovery and improve your result, and will need to be worn for several weeks.

How long will I need to recover?

Everyone will experience an anaesthetic or recover from an operation differently.  Although uncommon, complications can also occur and result in a longer recovery time.

A compression garment will need to be worn day and night for at least 2 weeks post-operatively to provide support to the treated area and to minimize swelling and bruising.  The garment is usually worn for a further week or more during the day whilst you regain confidence.  Light activity is encouraged as soon as possible, and most patients will return to normal daily activities within three weeks. More strenuous physical activity should be limited for 6 weeks.

Who should/should not consider this type of surgery?

The best results are achieved in those with a clearly defined concern and realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.  In situations where this is not the case, the outcome from surgery may often be disappointing.

You should not consider this type of surgery as a response to a personal or professional crisis, or under the encouragement of somebody else.  Any decision to undergo surgery needs to be for the right reasons.  All surgery entails an element of risk, and you should not make any decision regarding surgery at a time of stress.

Being healthy and happy with your decision increases the chances of achieving a satisfactory result.  Smoking, other medical conditions, and being overweight can make surgery unsafe.  These and other risks will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
