Overgrowth of the breasts not only causes heaviness, but also results in an increased likelihood of droopy breasts over time. Large breasts can result from excessive growth during puberty, from pregnancy and breastfeeding, and during the changes of menopause. Breast reduction surgery not only reduces the size of the breasts, but also elevates and reshapes them into a more youthful position. Mr Morgan’s aim is to achieve a breast shape that is natural in appearance and that is in proportion to the rest of your body.
Large breasts can be a significant burden for many women. They can cause neck and back pain, shoulder pain from bra straps, problems with rashes and infections beneath the breasts, difficulty with exercise and attempts at weight loss, and problems with finding correctly fitting bras and clothing, especially if the breast size is out of proportion to the rest of the body. Breast reduction surgery can therefore result in a tremendous improvement in a woman’s daily comfort and quality of life.
Most women who undergo breast reduction surgery are thrilled with the result and the improvement in their daily life. For many, their only regret is not having had the procedure performed earlier.
Mr Morgan has had many years of experience in performing these types of procedures. At your consultation, Mr Morgan will be able to show you before and after photos of his own patients, many of who will likely have had the same concerns about their breasts as you.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under a general anaesthesia and requires a hospital stay of between one and three nights.
All types of breast reduction surgery result in some form of scarring. The extent and placement of these scars will be determined on an individual basis, depending on the amount of reduction required, and the quality of the breast tissue and skin that remains. Sometimes liposuction can be performed as an additional procedure to provide the finishing touches and achieve the desired result. These options will all be discussed with you during your initial consultation.
The wounds are all closed with dissolving sutures and are covered with waterproof dressings, allowing you to shower as soon as you feel comfortable. You will be asked to wear a soft surgical bra for support and comfort during the first two weeks to allow your breast to heal properly in their new shape, and you should avoid heavy lifting for the first 6 weeks.
Everyone will experience an anaesthetic or recover from an operation differently. Although uncommon, complications can also occur and result in a longer recovery time.
A bra will need to be worn day and night for at least 2 weeks post-operatively to provide support for the healing breast and to maintain a natural shape. Light activity is encouraged as soon as possible, and many women will return to work within 3 weeks. More strenuous physical activity should be limited for a total of 6 weeks.
The best results are achieved in those with a clearly defined concern and realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve. In situations where this is not the case, the outcome from surgery may often be disappointing.
You should not consider this type of surgery as a response to a personal or professional crisis, or under the encouragement of somebody else. Any decision to undergo surgery needs to be for the right reasons. All surgery entails an element of risk, and you should not make any decision regarding surgery at a time of stress.
Being healthy and happy with your decision increases the chances of achieving a satisfactory result. Smoking, other medical conditions, and being overweight can make surgery unsafe. These and other risks will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
