Breast Augmentation

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure in which the breasts are enlarged through the insertion of implants.

What are the benefits of this procedure?

Many women are unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts, whether from a lack of development, or from the changes associated with pregnancy or ageing.  In these circumstances a breast enlargement can restore shape and bulk, and improve a woman’s self-confidence and sense of well-being.

At your consultation, which usually lasts 45 minutes, Mr Morgan will discuss with you the various options that are available with regards to implant size and shape, implant location, scar placement, and implant type. Every woman is different and has unique expectations, and we feel confident that following this discussion you will arrive at a decision that is right for you.

Is Mr Morgan experienced in this procedure?

Mr Morgan has had many years of experience in performing these types of procedures.  At your consultation, Mr Morgan will be able to show you before and after photos of his own patients, many of who will likely have had the same concerns about their breasts as you.

How is it performed?

This type of surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and is either day surgery or involves an overnight stay in hospital.  Post-operative pain is usually limited and is well controlled with tablets.  Your wounds will be covered with waterproof dressings so that you may shower as soon as you feel comfortable.  You will be asked to wear a soft surgical bra for support and comfort during the first two weeks to allow your breast to heal properly in their new shape, and you should avoid heavy lifting for the first 6 weeks.

How long will I need to recover?

Everyone will experience an anaesthetic or recover from an operation differently.  Although uncommon, complications can also occur and result in a longer recovery time.

Most women will return to light activities within one week, and can return to work by the end of the second week. Generally, most patients will recover sufficiently during these two weeks to return to social activity and office-based work.  By this time, swelling has largely resolved and you will feel confident with your new, fuller figure.  More strenuous physical activity should be limited for a total of 6 weeks.

Who should/should not consider this type of surgery?

The best results are achieved in those with a clearly defined concern and realistic expectations about what surgery can achieve.  In situations where this is not the case, the outcome from surgery may often be disappointing.

You should not consider this type of surgery as a response to a personal or professional crisis, or under the encouragement of somebody else.  Any decision to undergo surgery needs to be for the right reasons.  All surgery entails an element of risk, and you should not make any decision regarding surgery at a time of stress.

Being healthy and happy with your decision increases the chances of achieving a satisfactory result.  Smoking, other medical conditions, and being overweight can make surgery unsafe.  These and other risks will be discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
